Right lads I am heading back to college next year for my second year, I am currently driving a 1L Polo, which I have come to hate, it is not a nice car to spend 2 hours a day in, want to change, I will be doing upwards of 15k a year, so it has to be economical, I want to be getting at least 50mpg, preferably more, more is better. It has to be nice and comfortable, some gadgets would be nice but then electric windows are gadgets to me considering I don't have any, Tax no more that a 1.9, I will only go to 1.9 for the right car with good economy, the more mpg the better!

Finally heres the kicker, I only have 4k to spend. Any ideas much appreciated.

Cheapest option is to keep your polo running, I reckon, save up the other 2 grand more and then get a decent second hand 1.3 diesel like you where looking at before.

Don't let your impatience get the better of you to drop a car that works and is pretty cheap to run.

Then again, when you can get stuff like this within your budget: http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3405255 Why not change?

    @ OP
My son is in your situation.
Got a 1.9 tdi SEAT Toledo tdi

He is averaging 50mpg in it.
    Nice and comfy.

Can be got for well below your budget.
If a Toledo is not your cup of the then the Leon is a hatch version of it.

    Here is one.

Thanks, the toledo and the leon are based on the Bora and the Golf right, anything I should watch out for, how are they reliability wise?

It does, you can turn a car near enough into a van by putting down the seats, you can't however do the reverse with a van. Thanks anyway.

Tax is About 660 for 1.9's and do 50 Mpg when driven right. E.g 1.4 hdi do atleast 60mpg and tax is €350

    Yes.
    All basically the same car.

Nothing much to look out for. check that the floors are dry.
Front passenger floor damp normally could mean a badly fitted cabin filter,

Anywhere else can be via the doors. Again a simple fix. Nothing to reject a car over.

Other that that there is not much I can think of.
over 10 thousand miles on the one we bought and no problems.
Regular servicing and a change rear discs and pads ( they only cost around 50 odd euro )

Lovely car to drive as well.
    OH
    BTW,
My sons one is ready to rurn 200 thousand miles soon on the original engine.

Thats a very fair point, but I am personally not a fan of the 206, reliability wise and they aren't a very nice place to be, plus I think it's hard to find ones that are well minded.

I'm not either but its the most economical car ive had!

Vw and Peugeot both make a good strong Tdi & Hdi but make Pure Sh1t petrols.

a 1.4 diesel will never match the 1.9 tdi for cruising.

All depends what your wanting like?

206 = Way cheaper to run Tax, diesel , Insurance

Tdi, Tolly, Bora etc = Dearer to run, Safer care and More powerfull which means higher insurance aswell.

    Toledo are a Nice Car
