most compatible video format for dvd players

    hi
    what is the most universal format for playing on dvd players.
    i have started converting vhs to dvd but some users have said dvd player wont see dvd. i have tried mp4 avi mpeg without success.
    i have noticed that almost all dvd's come with the VIDEOTS AUDIOTS folder format.
    does anyone know what this format is and how i can burn a home movie using this format?????
