Was it a speed trap?

Went to Mullingar today, from Longford and on the way home, I saw a red van just inside Co. Westmeath on the Longford/Westmeath border, parked on the shoulder of the N4, direction facing Dublin.

The van was large and red, with blacked out back windows (I think, didn't get a good look) but it had a black box on the roof, about 20 cm high and 1/2 meter width and length. Looked to be in very good shape, but didn't get the reg.

Was that likely to be a speed trap van? I know there are some unmarked vans, at least the GoS*** vans are marked.

The camera is in the rear window and will flash at you like your Hollywood fame!

I think I know where your talking about. Yes some of the Garda vans are red and the Garda ones are unmarked to to speak.

And it doesn't need to flash if it is bright enough.

Not worried for myself, I was not speeding, and the back window, and that apparatus on the roof I imagine, was facing traffic in the other direction.

If it had the box on the roof, I'd say its a GoSafe van, if it was unmarked I'd imagine its one of their survey vans rather than an actual speed camera. Also afaik the GoSafe vans dont flash at all, I think they use Infrared.

The Garda GATSO vans are all white, unless they have replaced one. These flash, quite brightly, can usually even see the flash by day.

GoSafe have vans in various colours, generally 10-KY/LK registered. If unmarked, they are survey vans and you cannot be fined.

Neither of them have ever had any apparatus on the roof from what I've seen - they are generaly high roof and have extra vents, but that's all.
