DTT reception Curracloe Wexford

I am due to take a trip to the mother in law's newly acquired mobile home in Curracloe Wexford, to set up a DTT TV.

I haven't been there yet, but from photographs sent to me, the home has a vertically polarised VHF antenna(RTE 1,2) and a horizontal UHF(TV3 TG4) already fitted.

From the look of general directions, it doesn't seem to be pointed at Fourth Mountain which is where the Saorview coverage map says it should be aimed at.

Am I right to assume that the Fourth Mountain site is relatively new and that the area would have previously used another site for analogue?

I am told that a neighbouring antenna pointing in the same suspected wrong direction is picking up Saorview on Ch 47 (H) and not on 52 (V) which should be the service from Fourth Mountain.

Is anyone with local knowledge able to confirm my suspicion that the UHF antennas in the area are set up for the original analogue signal, therefore pointing in the wrong direction (and polarity) for local DTT?

If so, I will need to bring a ladder.

Both are pointed at Leinster. Ask your Mam in law what her TV3 is like if its good there is no need for a ladder or an Aerial pointing at Forth. I dont know where the neighbouring Aerial is getting CH 47 from. Down here you have Leinster on CH 45H, Forth on CH52V, and Gorey on CH 55H. If TV3 is crap then you will need a Wide band pointing at Forth MT because the UHF that is already on the Mobile home is Group A 21-37.

Unless you fitted it yourself, you can't be sure it isn't a wideband.

True. It could already be wideband. Ger Roe come back and let us know how you get on.

    Thanks guys.

I'll know more when I get down to look. The ch 47 report may be a red herring - 2nd hand info and all that. It's probably more likely from what you say that they are receiving DTT from Leinster. I have since been told that the DTT reception isn't reliable anyway.

I have a wideband going spare so will bring it with me when I get the chance and point it towards fourth.

    Will report back.

    Ger

If it is a group A don't take it down as Mt Leinster is moving frequency from Ch45 to Ch23 in October.

Just in case you are going out to buy a different group aerial.

In Curracloe it would be Mt Leinster. Forth cannot be received in parts of Wexford Town let alone Curracloe. Its fairly low power.

    Thanks for the info STB.

I'll hold off doing anything permanent until I get down and have a fiddle with what's there.

    Cheers.

Just to let you know I am getting Saorview on Channel 47 here in North Offaly and AFAIK its from Carin Hill in Co Longford. So thats a long way for you to be receiving it from!

I have been following this thread with interest and in particular STB's comment that Mt. Leinster is switching to Ch.25 which requires a Group A aerial.

To date I have been happy with my DTT system (location Cahore) which consists of a Group B aerial pointed to Preseli and a smaller Group B pointed at Mt. Leinster.

The fact that Mt. Leinster is switching to Ch. 23 is a mixture of good and bad news for me.

    My questions now are

    1) Presumeably as Ch. 45 will be free of interference from Mt. Leinster I will be to receive additional UK channels on my Preseli aerial such as Dave, Sky News and E4 +1 ?

    2) Will I now have to change my Mt. Leinster Group B to a Group A and if so should this be Horizontal or Vertical ?

Both aerials are mounted outside and I normally get excellent DTT reception from both. If the conditions are right I can even receive Saorview from CH. 54 on the side of the Preseli aerial, but not always.

    Thanks for any replies.

Your group B aerial might be alright for the channel change if the signal is strong enough, obviously a group A will give optimal reception. It will still be mounted horizontally & you'll be able to use a diplexer (more efficient than plain combiner/splitter) to combine both aerials into a single feed.

Around Curracloe, Forth Mt should be good and possibly better than Mt. Leinster. I know that Preseli is strong there, so there could be some interference to Ch. 45 until switchover.

Cairn Hill has always had an influence in parts of Wexford, causing the venetian blind effect on analogue signals which were co channel with Preseli in the old days.

Forth Mt is a problem for parts of Wexford town, especially out of town on the Rosslare Rd. MMDS was also rubbish there. Not sure why the chose that site TBH.
