    Hi.

I have a 2006 passat. Bkp engine.140bhp, 103 kw. Without diesel particle filter.

What engine oil do i use in a normal service - 10k or 1yr.
Is Castrol Magnatec (A1) 5w30 fully synthetic sufficient for this car for a service.

Its currently on offer in Halfords for 20euro, (4lts).

    Thanks.

    David

Magnatec is not suitable for this engine.

You need an oil which meets VW 507.00 spec. In Castrol this would be Edge 5w30 but there are plenty of other oils which meet the spec.

    Thanks George.

    The manual states 505 01 or 507 00.

    Does magnatec meet the 505 01 ?

    Thanks.

    No it doesn't.

505.01 spec oil is not that widely available. It is usually a 5w40 fully synthetic oil but you need to be careful as not all 5w40 oil will meet the spec.

    Thanks George.

Looks like I'll have to spend a little more then.

Any idea what I should be looking at price wise for it?

Around €40 for 4 litres or €50 for 5 should be possible. VW sell their own brand Quantum oil at a good price to the trade so might be worth checking your local dealer for a price and chancing your arm for a bit of discount.

Surprisingly, vw dealer is about the cheapest place to get oil that meets the spec required.
About €44 the last I checked for 5L of the 507.00 longlife spec oil.
