    Just a quick question:

Would a persuasive essay be the same as a persuasive speech? E.g. 2003 composition q.2 = Write a persuasive article or essay in which you attempt to convince people of the meaning and importance of heroes in life.

Essentially. The only real difference is that you write a speech with the intention of delivering it verbally, while an essay is written and your audience will read it. Thus, your initial adressing of your audience may change slightly from a speech as your audience are not in front of you.
