How is the 3d aspect of Prometheus?

I can't trawl through the other Prometheus thread for opinions on the 3D version because there are just too many posts, and I don't want to see any spoilers.

So can somebody here tell me if the 3D version is any good? I have a choice between that and 2D.

    Dark, I'd imagine.

How is the 3d aspect of Prometheus, what?

Good, bad, light, dark, deep, shallow?

I went with a friend this morning whose schedule didn't suit the 2D showings. The 3D is dreadful. Dark, murky, colourless, sh*tty looking. I don't recall any impressive 3D moments in the film that were worth the lousy image. Going to see it again on Monday in 2D.

I know I've said this before, but that's really it for me and 3D. I'd rather wait and watch a film on DVD then endure another crappy 3D screening.

That's a pity. I've never seen a 3D movie before and was looking forward to this. I really didn't think Ridley Scott would fcuk it up...

Anyone else care to share their opinion on Prometheus 3D?

    mike65 go away.

I think it depends on the cinema. I saw it last night at the new cinema in Limerick and the screen was bright. The visuals were stunning. I've never seen a better implementation of 3D. I'll probably go again in a week or so.

Or make your own Anti 3D glasses? :D

Heading home to Clare for the weekend so I'm gonna cross the border and try out the new cinema in Limerick that CL7 mention, seem to bee the bees knees by all accounts although it is only offering 3D.

Haven't watched a 3D film from the modern wave before though so probably won't be able to offer a reliable opnion on its merits or otherwise in Prometheus.

I saw it in the Lighthouse with active shutter glasses instead of the polarising ones.
It was still underwhelming in terms of 3D, although I enjoyed the movie.
The map room was spectacular, and there is a scene where a character is, themselves, watching a surprisingly 3D movie and it's well done.
I reckon that 3D just doesn't suit dark films, in the same way that we are attuned to seeing the dark in mono tones rather than technicolour.

    I agree with this.
I've seen a good few movies in 3d now and this one beats them all for visuals.

Saw it in the Odeon Isense and thought the 3d was really good, was my first time seeing a 3d film and it was quite nice wasn't too gimickey or in your face like some of the 3d in trailers before the film and really added to the overall look of the film which was absolutely awesome. The film was made for 3d!. Will be going back to see it again next week

Saw it today in Cineworld with the normal Real D glasses you get.

I thought it looked great. The 3D effect works very well for the space/landing sections at the beginning. After that it has a couple of other good moments. But most of the time it's subtle and very nicely done I felt. It does give a nice sense of depth, even in things like the HUD of the space suits.

You'll notice if you take the glasses off during it that it is darker and less colourful with them on. That said, it wasn't noticeable until I had taken them off.

As with any 3D film, try to sit near the back. I always sit in at least the back half or third of the screen. It can feel a little overwhelming if you're too close.

Going by the other thread a lot of people seemed to hate it, but I felt it was well worth seeing it in 3D! Saw Avengers in 3D too (weird as I don't usually go for 3D) and Prometheus is far superior in terms of the use of the 3D

Saw it today in cineworld. Didnt think the 3D added anything to it at all, but i didnt think it was terrible either. No impact though probably means it was pointless.

    adds nothing to it

It's weird that opinions are so polarised. My fiance thought the 3D was amazing. She didn't think much of the film itself so she wasn't getting carried away with the hype. I'm interested in hearing Krudler's opinion when he gets a chance to see it.

3D is largely gimicky and with this film no less so.

After 10 minutes i forgot it was 3d. Same with Avatar, same with this.

Films are largely story driven and the brain doesn't give a crap if the visuals suck - if the story is good.... But the brain really does care if the story is CRAP just because the visuals are mind-blowing.

I can think of endless examples of both cases but won't bore you.

I thought Prometheus in 3D was excellent, visual effects were very good.Big pity about the flick after all the hype, storyline was a big letdown as prequel to Alien.Give me Ripley any day.

Saw it in IMAX 3D over here in London. I wasn't really impressed by much of the 3D TBH. One jarring problem was the over use of depth that completely ruined the scale of several shots making them appear as miniature.

The movie itself was frustrating and underwhelming. The script was appalling.

The 3D is good to the extent that 3D is ever good. I only went to a 3D screening because the time was convenient. It's fine, won't spoil the experience, but not really justified and deffo not necessary.

It's not so much the loss of brightness that bothers me with 3D, but the crosstalk, which always seems very noticable, particularly in films with a lot of dark scenes.

I thought the 3D was excellent in this movie really added to it rather than being an unnecessary affectation and distraction like 3D usually is in most movies.

First 3D movie i have seen that i didnt wish i had seen the 2D version instead!

loved the film but thought the 3D was a waste of time.

its really not necessary at all IMO and you'd have just as good a time with the 2D version.

It must vary a lot from cinema to cinema. I loved the 3D in this, and I think it really added a lot to the visual appeal and immersion of the film. I thought it was very well done. It was stunning in some scenes, really showing off the fantastic landscapes, stunning views from/of the ship etc. The "gimmicky bits" that directors can't resist putting in were nicely integrated and really showed off the technology without feeling pointless. It never got in the way of scenes where it shouldn't, instead just providing a natural feeling depth and sense of immersion.

I actually thought the 3D element was pretty good. However, you'll find better plots in a porno. Allegedly ;-)
