I'm talking about a club pro am ( teams of 3 amateurs & 1 club pro). If yes what did you think of it? Would it be worth playing just to see a club pro up close and in action?

Yes once in Greenore, Co. Louth, and the lad went on to win the professionals competition the same week. A nice chap from Wexford but can't remember his name. Gave us some great tips too.

Didnt play in it but back in 1992 as a young lad,i caddied for Dr Michael Smurfit in the pro-am for the Irish open in Killarney that year.he was one of the richest people in Ireland but an absolute gent and a very good golfer aswell, an American dude Mark McCumber was the pro in the group and i remember not being any way impressed by him. the highlight of that day was the juicy tip smurfit gave me:)

Yes I've played in loads of them and they are a great day out.It really all depends on the pro you are drawn with but the majority are sound lads. They don't all shoot under par haha and sometimes it's nice to see a pro shoot 10 over par.Nearly all that I've played with will give you tips.Neil Manchip and Gerry Burke were especially great although we did win the tournaments with them.I'll be playing the Wexford one in a few weeks after qualifying last week.

Glen Robinson it was. A lovely lad. I gave him a few good tips and sorted him out, that's why he went on to win.:D

Playing one this weekend and not really sure what to expect. Hope the other two amateurs are playing off 20, would hate to be spraying balls everywhere while single figure amateurs are burning it up. :o

    Nice story....

I remember going to the practice ground that morning with mr Smurfit before the round,he had this very unusual driver, cant remember exactly what it was made of but he let me have a few shots with it.
one of the things that stood out that day was the bodyguard that was never more than 10 feet away and who always had one hand inside his jacket

yes played in a few of them. my aim was always to try and beat the pro off my handicap, did it once or twice ,drives them mad!!!.one lad didnt hole anything on the front nine,so then asked us for a few lines on the putts.he managed to hole a few on the way home .he made a nice cheque and bought us a beer after the game .good day out.

I played in one in South County a couple of years ago with the pro from Roganstown. It's just the consistency of his ball flight that I was impressed by, and his religious pre-shot routines. He gave us all a lot of tips on the way around, one of them being that ALL players should look at putts from both directions before settling on a line. Takes up a lot more time so I think a lot of people wouldn't appreciate it, but if it's good enough for the pros then we should be doing it!

Agree it really depends on the pro you get. Played one last year and was lucky enough to be drawn with Simon Thornton.Really Nice lad and an awesome golfer to boot.Really chatty and willing to help you out even though he was challenging for the tournament (came 2nd).
But yeah would recommmend it big time , great experience and you learn a lot. p.s. good luck to Simon over the weekend as hes doing well in Wales :)

Played in a few, twice in the US, I was in a clubhouse with some PGA pros the morning Tiger gave that shameful press conference in Sawgrass, some very interesting comments from them.

There is a fantastic proam in ballyliffen in July, it used to be the biggest in Europe at one time. Worth going too just for the 2 fantastic courses.

Proams are very very enjoyable if you know the pro and he is a sound guy.

The Ballyliien pro am is great alright on two beautiful golf courses. Can't beat the food in the Rusty Nail, think I gained a stone last year haha.

My idea of a perfect weekend, two games of golf on two great courses with two late nights of eating and drinking with three mates.
