    Hi all,

Am new to Strava app, downloaded to iphone and have jist off how it works, but bit confused about how segments work. Am I right in thinking that if your out for a spin and if a segment is included in your route its compared against other participants who have done that segment, or is there more to it than that - basically if i wanted to have a go at a segment that already existed how do i go about doing that ?

Newbie to it so thanks in advance for replies

Haven't used it much yet myself, but yes you're right. If your cycle includes a segment it will automatically calculate your time for that segment when you upload your cycle to the site.
Just make sure you know where it starts/finishes so you can put in the extra bit of effort :)

Search for segments on your proposed route, and when you find one do it as fast as you can ...

(or if you're like me, plan your route to take in whatever you think are the most "gettable" KOMs, taking into account wind etc;))

I recently compiled a list of achievables

    http://app.strava.com/segments/1088927 - Pinnock Hill
    http://app.strava.com/segments/1053442 - Swords Malahide
    http://app.strava.com/segments/1079868 - Malahide Swords
    http://app.strava.com/segments/919822 - Estuary Eastbound
    http://app.strava.com/segments/717876 - Estuary Westbound
    http://app.strava.com/segments/1295137 - Balheary Rd Westbound
http://app.strava.com/segments/814596 - 500m downhill to Pinnock Hill Roundabout
http://app.strava.com/segments/763868 - Hill left before Roganstown
    http://app.strava.com/segments/1041892 - Turvey Avenue Westbound
    http://app.strava.com/segments/1041883 - Turvey Avenue Eastbound
    http://app.strava.com/segments/1038722 - Swords Coorstown Roganstown

Will work on them when winds are appropriately aligned.

You're doing it wrong. The point of Strava is to quantify one's mediocrity against proper cyclists, not declare victory on remote stretches of flat road that people use for recovery rides or commuting. :pac:

Posting them up here may not be the smartest thing to do so.... ;)

No you sir are doing it wrong. All boards members of Strava are declaring victory on remote sections of flat road usually with a large tailwind to boot.

Of course waiting for a tractor to draft off is expected , Beasty gets one of his men from the demense to drive in front of him.

FFS will you guys stop giving the tips out...

Anyway, only one of my KOMs was tractor assisted, and I had to overtake it part way through as it was slowing me down. Another involved a car that slowed me down at both ends (may have speeded me up a bit in the middle mind, so I'm arguing it evened out)
