As it's Friday I think it might be fun to look at this. The rules, entitlements, dos and don'ts of a Strava KOM and or QOM.

    For example:

    1. The Strava KOM/QOM shall be aided by his/her domestiques on all cycles when they are ranked below the KOM/QOM on the particular section of road upon which they are travelling at any given time. This form of aid shall be at the discretion of the KOM/QOM.

    2.....

    Happy Friday!!!

I am glad Adam's not on boards, this suggestion could make the 8.30am spin fun lol!

2....Within 24Hrs of achieving a KOM/QOM, the precise location of the segment must be revealed here, to give the massed ranks of Boardsies a shot at it. Failure to comply will result in....? (suggested punishments at discretion of Mods)

    3. The KOM/QOM does not recognise the authority of a boards moderator!

gotta agree with jimm on this one

The only exception being KOMs established by mods, who, for the purposes of Strava, should be considered "protected" riders - boardsies (and I mean you in particular shaungil) should not be allowed to target KOMs set by me mods

Jesus, if you Swords lads were as good at racing as naming all the parts of your club spins you'd clean up.

    4. Wearing a polka dot jersey on a segment for which you are not KOM or QOM will render said wearer liable to being muttered at.

KOMs or QOMs which are not actually on hills or mountains shall be ignored.

KOF or QOF, that's the compromise.

TBH, I'd got pretty much all of them sussed out - it's a shame that someone decides to publicise them like this though...

garmin training centre says 61.6 km/h top speed, google earth shows the same file as 64km/h, which is correct?!

Likewise Strava shows the top speed from my last ride as 81.9kph and Garmin shows 62kph.

I'm guessing Garmin normalise the glitches that can occur with their GPS data, so I would trust their top speed data more.

    5. The KOM/QOM has the sole right to decide which data source to rely on. All others must cede to their (divine) will.

Beasty all you ones on near my commute are not going to be attainable till the next storm from the north and I put the spinnaker up.

Just because it was too windy for you guys to venture out that day. Strava did cut my trip round the Lusk bypass out (presumably because I wasn't in the cycle track:rolleyes:) which means you are are actually doing 700 metres less than I did that day :)

An exercised bunch on the Swords Saturday morning spin could do some damage to the segments from the airport to blakes cross.....

Eh? Sure cycling isn't a team sport, is it?!?

Slight off topic drag but it seems there's a few people from Swords area and thereabouts here

I was out there recently and cycled to the Estuary. I would have gone on to Skerries / Balbriggan but I hate cycling along the main road, the old belfast road I suppose

But when I pulled up the ride on line it looked like there was a route up back roads towards Lusk? I always thought the North side of the Estuary was just a dead end but there seemed to be little lanes marked on the satellite map. Are these accessible or private property?

It would make Dublin Howth Malahide Lusk Skerries and back a great cycle if you didn't have to go on that main road from Swords to Lush

    Anyone any ideas? Thanks

You can't get to Lusk without going on the main road... unless you wanna swim a bit.

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

The old N1 (R132) is fine as it has a hard shoulder. I've heard some people raise concerns about the Blakes X to Lusk bit, but I've never had any problems (that's one of my KOM targets;) - just haven't had a decent South Westerly since I signed up to Strava). There is an alternative where you take a right just after Blakes X and brings you out near the Lusk/Rush railway station

Sorry, I'm making a small balls of the geography, I'm just wondering per the attached googlemap here, is there a turn off road on the North side of the estuary through to Donabate, that at least allows me to cut the bit on the R132 down to about 1k, to Blakes' Cross?

I just thought that that north side road was a dead end?

    http://maps.google.ie/maps?oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&q=lissenhall&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x486710d80631c4a3:0x1800c7acf196e910,Lissenhall,+Co.+Dublin&gl=ie&ei=bCHJT-SRH4OKhQeA6cjZDw&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=image&resnum=8&ved=0CBQQ8gEwBw

Edit: I should say what I'm really asking is do the lanes marked on that google map actually exist and are they public?

You can go all the way around Broadmeadow Eastury without going on the main road, but it's not really suitable and it would take longer than it's worth if you are out for a good cycle. It's fine for pottering around though. If the tide is out you can ride a pot holed road around. If the tide is in then that will be covered but you can still ride on the path on top of the wall.
