Is there any legal obligations when you find something?

My da lost his wallet earlier today , and he's almost certain it was at a local petrol station.

He is went up to check if anyone handed it in but no luck.

after checking at the house again and rethinking his steps hes pretty sure he dropped it at the station.

question is, if the station checks the cameras and sees someone pick it up and drive away, is that fair game or should he have handed it in legally?

or even can anything be done about it?

A person who finds something of value can be guilty of theft by finding if they fail to take 'reasonable steps' to find the owner.

The law as adjudged in the well known case of Finders v Keepers applies, of course.
