    Hi all,
Can someone tell me the answer to:
I just bought a used car, the tax has run out in march so I was wondering do I tax from when I own the car or am I liable for back tax?

    Cheers

Only from when you own it.

    Your liable for back tax.

Am I ok to drive the car until I receive the log book?

Technically no. I did the same as you, bought a car which hadn't been taxed for a while, drove it while waiting for the new log book, and got a Fixed Charge Penalty Notice in the post. In fairness though, it was only 3 days after I bought the car, and the Gardaí cancelled the offence when I explained it to them, but technically you're not supposed to have the vehicle on the road without Motor Tax being paid.

Strictly speaking you cannot drive the car on the road without tax. However the garda may overlook this if you can produce evidence that you just bought the car. That is entirely at his/her discression and you may be prosecuted. You are only liable for the car tax from the time you became the registered owner.;)

You're liable for tax from the begining of the month of purchase, chance June as it's close.
I've heard Shannon now text your pin no. to tax on line.
In the meantime log onto to motor tax ie go to retrieve pin.
