    Aldi have on offer next week:-

    * 40" HD Ready 1080P LCD TV with Saorview for €349.99
    * DVB-T Tuner
    * USB Multimedia and PVR functionality (via USB)
    * 3 HDMI
    * 7 day EPG
    * 1 scart connection
    * D energy rating
    * 3 year warranty

    (Not on website yet.)

    There is no brand name on the brouchure - would it be Tevion?

    Is this TV any good for Saorview? Anyone bought one previously?

    Be aware it's only HD Ready and not Full HD.

    As stated previously in boards
    , HD ready is just a marketing ploy. In any case they state 1080P which is full HD.

    It's an E-Motion branded TV which appears to be Saorview approved:

    http://www.saorview.ie/product/emotion-2/

    'HD Ready 1080p' is confusing but it appears to be Full HD per User Guide:

    It seems decent specs for the price. Does anyone know if the speakers are decent? I might go for one.

    Looks like seriously good value and might go for it myself but seeing as it would be the main TV in the house, sound and picture quality would be important something you can never see in Aldi before you buy.

    is it a D rated tv? does this make much difference in annual electricity usage really?

    It seems as if the rating does not depend on the size of the TV. I.e. A larger TV is allowed relatively more power than a small one. In other words a D rated 19" TV would consume less than a D rated 40".

    At the bottom of the label it should indicate average running costs of a year (kwh) which based on current electricity prices should give a quick idea of cost.

    http://www.umweltbundesamt.de/energie-e/kennzeichnung/fernsehgeraete.htm

    It says here over 10 years a D rated 40" consumes €487 of electricity more than an A+ TV
    The same size TV but A rated would cost 60 Euro more than an A+.

    In German
    http://www.umweltbundesamt.de/energie/kennzeichnung/fernseher_energiekosten.pdf

    So for this TV you are looking at paying €49 per year in electricity (more than an A+), VS an A rated model which would only cost 6 euros a year. If you assume you watch TV the average amount, and the TV lasts 10 years the true cost of this TV is 350+487=837

    For example this LG from power city over 10 years
    http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-13-42LS340&pages=1&prod=42LS340&brands=LG&image=
    550+60=610 or a 220 Euro savings over the aldi model. It probably does make sense to at least include this cost in "bargain" calculations.

    OK It's only 22 quid a year difference, but who would have thought a €550 euro 42" was better value than a €350 42". After doing these sums I wouldn't buy a large D rated TV.

    There is also a calculator here showing annual cost
    http://www.sust-it.net/energy_saving.php?id=85&start=175

    More efficient TV's may also happen to be newer models with more features although some people would argue different technologies give a different picture quality/brightness. If it's not your main TV and thus on less the sums work out differently too.
