ive a few acres marked for silage later in the summer. half is grazed , half wasnt and is getting a bit wispy but still fairly thin.
all needs spraying for weeds (pastor) and a few bags of N and topping to thicken up but in what order should i do it ?
sow bag stuff, spray and top ?
any advice waould be great . cheers

Personally I'd spray, wait a week. Then top and lastly apply fert.
Spray first to ensure all weeds are caught.
Top to promote grass to thicken and regrow.
Fertilise to feed the new regrowth.

The half that wasn't grazed, you're going to TOP it :confused:

    If I was you...

Top the grazed area, make a few bales out of the ungrazed stuff.

After 5 days spread the fertilizer and after a further 10 days spray the weeds.

If its weedy, thin and wispy (OP's description, not mine) I wouldn't make it into bales.. Bales are expensive and we should be trying only to bale high quality feeding.. Bales of Sh1te are a serious waste of money..

Get it right and then make good bales !

my thinking was if i sprayed the weed killer it would get taken to the root , topping would remove the stalk etc while the weed killer was still present in the root stunting weed regrowth. i planned on topping grazed area tightish to thicken it up and spread dung while id go higher (4-5 -6 inches) on the ungrazed to thicken it up . i should say that it was grazed tight last autumn and had no slurry and with this years weather grass is only shooting on this last wk or 2 .
    is that plan crazy ?

    Dung??
I wouldn't consider dung at this stage if you want to cut silage this year.. It won't have rotted down in time and will contaminate the silage..

From above your need to top as soon as possible, then spread slurry no dung, then spread fertlizer and then when weeds are ready spray if you have dock's or thistles you should wait until they have regrown a bit before you spray, also if you used slurry you would need to wait until weeds are well above slurry before spraying.

I just strip grazed my silage ground and closed it 7 days ago. after all the rain i threw a pallet on the 6ft chain harrow behind the quad and im not joking it spread all the dung really well almost as good as slurry.. i did the same last year and had a bumper crop of lovely even silage... the dung pats if really wet and you get the speed up just explode!:D
