New is super but tough i love it. Have not played the old so can't really compare.

The new has a couple of really wow holes over the water and is beautiful,

The rough is extremely tough to play from but I loved it , its also longer than the Old .

The Old is shorter than the new but is a lot tighter and IMO not as many wow holes on it.

Both lovely courses, If we were looking at one for a boards outing the NEW would get my vote.

Thanks Mike12 .. just found a slide show of both courses on their website. New looks very tough with all that water but does look super. Will have to try it out very soon! Might book the old for the Society given the mix of handicaps we have !

My Dad plays it and he prefers the old - his handicap is 19

I would choose the new any day, I love it. That said, I've only played the old in the winter, it's supposed to be lovely in the summer

This shouldn't even be a talking point IMHO.

The New sits comfortably amongst the country's grade A parklands and has a handful of the very best holes in Ireland. It is also one of the nicest parkland walks you'll ever take, through trees, lakes and nature reserves.

The Old is a bog standard tree-lined course, which would get lost among the country's plethora of grade B tracks. It is a decent course, but there is nothing inspiring about it, and it's not worth driving any distance to play.

By the way, despite all the water, the New is no big slog off the society tees. It's a completely different animal further back.

Headfort's open week ends next Wed 6th June with the competition played from the Blues on the new course, would be a cracking competition that if it wasn't for work

Two excellent courses. But if the group has a fair few high handicappers I would be inclined to book the Old on that basis, less loss balls and slow play.

But you can't go wrong with either.

Thanks for all the info. In the end choice was made by the Club as they have an open on the OLD the day I was booking for...So its the NEW.

Will make for an interesting Captains Prize Day

    Dak,

Originally from Kells and worked in Headfort, father a member for 40+ years

New course is fantastic, great scenery, water water and more water...so bring plenty of spare balls for the higher handicappers. Would recommend playing the old course also, on your own during open week or maybe in 2013.

As a course and club Headfort has one of the best reputations in the land and get a lot of repeat business and societal bookings, so don't be surprised if you book for 2013 after the day out.

Club house, catering and bar facilities will more than cater for all your needs..

    Enjoy it :)

Have played the New once and would love to play it again on the one condition that someone else does the necessary for me in the Pro Shop - an almost unbelievable level of disinterest shown to a customer... Had the breakfast in the club house earlier and the staff in there were a universe apart.

Unfortunately members receive the same treatment, so my only advice would be to try and deal with the wonderful ladies at the front desk where possible and buy your snacks elsewhere!

Then just enjoy whichever course you are there to play!

New course is a delight to play - but some tee shots are not for the faint hearted!!

No contest - New every time. Simply a cracking parkland course with some great holes.

The only pity about Headfort is that there isn't a NEW proshop and an OLD one.

I have been playing Headford every june for about ten years and all the comments about the pro shop are true. Brendan Mc Govern may be a good pro, but his people skills are dubious to say the least ..... depends on his mood.

The restaurant was top notch for years, but last year it was a different crew and very disappointing.

Old course is 7.5/10 while the new course is 9/10.

So why's he still there after all the negative comments and poor first impressions he creates of the place? I've only played Headfort in a society and on both occasions I paid the fees for our group to the office inside where everyone was very courteous and polite so never encountered the wrath of the "pro"

Thats a question for the club ..... I know a few where the pro is there that long, he rules the roost. I only play there once or twice a year and like you say, the office and clubhouse staff are very friendly. I think the 'wrath' of the pro is a bit over the top, I'd say he can be described as gruff at times and probably not to members. I am sure he's probably very good to the members and his style would not put me off going there, it was just interesting that other visitors had similar views on him.
