New Casette

    Hi All,

I just bought a new 6 speed cassette & chain for my hybrid, (won't name the shop as I usually have a good experience with them).

The thing is the smallest sprocket has uneven teeth. If you look it closely at the sprocket - where there is normally a taper at the top of the steel - some of the teeth have this taper and some don't. Its as if the sprocket was put up off center against a grinding wheel or something.

Now I'm presuming this is incorrect and am planning to return it - unless in my limited mechanical knowledge I've missed something? Anyone have a similar experience with a new cassette?

The teeth on most cassettes should appear all over the place, as this assists with the shifting, allowing the chain to move more easily on and off the sprockets.

You could still be right, but without a picture I'd be inclined to say that this is perfectly normal.

    Here's an example.

You can see the teeth at 9 and 3 o'clock are tapered but the rest aren't.

Makes sense when you put it like that - I should be more trusting. Thanks.
