When looking for a photographer - what question must one ask around copyrights?

I don't want my photos being used for example pictures on his website or to be put anywhere by him.

you can ask a number of different ways.

    1. can I have images on a DVD/CD with full rights to reproduce - including full copyright.
    2. as part of the contract is it possible that you wont use the images online or in any way to promote your business (mention that you like your privacy and dont want to see the images online - so you could in theory ask the photographer for both of you to be restricted to no-online usage of the images and the photographer is also restricted to usage of the images for promotional purposes)

From reading between the lines you have a photographer in mind already - but because they put images on facebook or their blog/website and possible in magazines (advertising themselves) - you want your wedding to be a private affair.

I work as a photographer - not a wedding photographer - but most photographers these days will adjust their packages to suit you - you may pay extra for having a bespoke wedding package - or some photographers might just be glad of the business.

I'm getting married August 2013 and have been put in charge of wedding photos, hire car (if any) organising my suit and wedding party suits and honeymoon..... I have yet to ask around but have bee showing the fiancee some portfolio's of some friends who do a bit of wedding photography, if you know what you want from your photographer and you like their style .... ask them if they are willing to do what you request - if not, .... be prepared to move on to another photographer.

if you havent booked anyone yet - do you know what style of photos you do like ?

    Thanks for that.

I'm getting married abroad and was looking at the local areas list of their photographers and I was not impressed so I am thinking of getting one from Ireland to go over.

The kind of photos would be some posed/funny/candid/off the cuff photos like just catching people.

Thats mad. I always ask if I can use clients pics on my website after the event and if they ask me not to then i respect them don't use them anywhere. I don't double my price either :-)

The price he originally gave was 790 and it was a good package and it wa with the condition the air fare was no more than 300.

The price has now gone to 1100+ accommodation + air fare.

So that about 1400, almost double the original quote.

Do many photographers travel abroad to cover weddings?

Some do, I've done one in Rome. Wouldn't mind another one if you want to PM me your details :)

    Thanks for that PM sent.

What are other couples doing? Getting all the copyrights or are you not bothered about having your pictures being used?

Not bothered about it in the slightest. The photographer is only going to use really good photos or they'd be making themselves look bad.

unless agreed beforehand (and I'd have imagined it would come at a price) I'm pretty sure all photographers have full rights to their own photos and therefore can use then wherever and whenever they want. However, it's usually in their best interests to no overdo it so as not to offend existing clients or put off future ones.
This is how photographers advertise their business or style though. If they couldn't show your photos then they couldn't get future business off the great pictures they'd have taken, similarly you wouldn't have known the types of photos he takes if you hadn't seen someone else's album.

Yeah, the vast majority of photographers will want to use your photographs to promote themselves. If they get a great shot that they really like, for example, it's almost counter-productive for them to keep it hidden away (unless they already have a massive portfolio, but even then they may feel that an image/s from your day was better or different in some way).

Most photographers will travel if they are getting paid well or if they are genuinely interested in the work. I'm not sure if I read your post correctly, but it seems your photographer is only charging you €490 to cover your wedding in a different country (€790 provided airfare doesn't exceed €300?).

To be honest, If you actually like his photos and think he'll be competent and do a good job, if I were you, I'd have taken the hand off him with such a price. I don't know many photographers that would do a wedding for €490 in their own town, let alone in a different country.
