Are Volvo V40/S40 GDi engines really bad?

Are the GDi engines in older S40/V40 Volvos to be avoided?
The mpg seems excellent in them compared to the 1783 Volvo unit.
Anybody have any experience with them?

In fairness, I haven't heard other volvos, or mitsubishis any as bad as the one I went to look at. Lovely car but valves were completely coked up. Couldn't live with the noise - I'd have bought diesel if I wanted a a crap sounding engine!

I drove the 1.8se Volvo gdi for years, Yes it did make that ticking noise, every now and then the revs jumped when idle, but to be fair i put 150k miles on it and never had any major problem. My only problem was with my local volvo dealer and their magpie like lust for silver.

I used to get 42mpg easy enough on an N road around the country, day to day driving i was closer to 38mpg. Great car though, and it still drives by me every other day in town, Better spec than what i have now, Shouldn't have got rid of it ;)

I'd avoid one at all costs.

While all direct injection engines can suffer from carbon build up, this is a very early design and is especially prone to it.

This engine was desgined originally to work on high octane Japanese fuel and was then 'tuned down' for Europe as opposed to being designed to run on European fuel.

Never mind the carbon build up, there are other issues that these engines can suffer. They're not especially quick either.
