I have had a problem concentrating all my life, I don't seem to be able to pay attention to anything difficult for any longer than 5 mins, I've tried everything meditation, counselling, taking Omega-3.

I'm a very active person, have a very healthy diet and am fit, I work in an industry that needs you to study a lot, all the time things are moving forward. You are required to get certified in the topics at hand, I've never been able to get past the first chapter in the book, I find them really intensely boring! and I've really really tried.. I learn more by manual tasks.

I've been in this industry for 20 years now and I think I am failing at life..

    What does that mean?
What are your parameters for winning at life?
Mine are being happy. I have no other expectation on myself other than that.
If you are not happy in your current job, change it.

20 years is a long time to be in an industry you dont like and if your doing something like accountancy then yes the books are boring and dull and you do learn more by doing it rather than reading about it, and having to get certified in this and that is intense and you never seem to stop having to learn things, unfortunately this is the industry you are in accountancy or not

so the big question is how do you change it, do you have the financial means and time to study a new career, have you anything in mind that you would like to do with your life

I know this is harsh but its all well and good moaning about what your doing now but you need to make a plan and have an idea of what you want to do in order to change it

Absolutely know what you mean about concentration (and memory in my case). I could never do exams because I can't remember facts, but given the facts I can demonstrate that I understand them and can act on the result. So, for example I could write a thesis, but not do an exam. So I studied and qualified in an area where skill was more important than remembering stuff - thesis, continuous assessment, portfolio, no exams.

I have a bit of a bee in my bonnet that you can get allowances made for dyslexia but not for not being able to remember lists of dates. People try and teach you ways of remembering lists and tell you 'you could learn if off if you really wanted to'.

If you are really bogged down with what you are doing, have a look at retraining into an area where skills are more important than remembering.
