2nd Job - Will my employer know?

Currently in a contract which does not prevent me from having a 2nd job. However, I would like to keep it discrete for personal reasons. My current employer has my certificate of tax credits. So if I get a new job, is there anyway they would know?

Basically? How would I avoid them from knowing? More than happy to go on Emergency tax for 2nd job as long as its kept discrete, only short term employment anyway.

    All help/comments appreciated :)

You can choose not to have any tax credits on the second income - pay tax on the full amount. I've had various 2nd jobs over the years and did it that way. My employer would probably have known but I was discreet, didn't talk about them and didn't let them affect my main job.

Ironically, the employers who employed me knowing I had another main job were delighted with me and used to say that I was a lot more useful than their normal employees.

To be perfectly honest im not a 100%, or rather, the information im providing isn't confirmed :D

Basically: I started a Full time permanent job this time last year, great company , good salary etc. BUT i still kept on my old bar job at the time - the revenue automatically split my tax credits between both jobs, but my new job where none the wiser, in the sense that i was alerted to the fact that my tax credits where dropped, but they had no idea why, and they certainly couldn't see that i worked in another place.

what your employers see for you, tax cert. wise is, the basic stuff they need to know, everything else is your own private information.

the only way i would know that they could find out, is by turning up to work constantly tired/drained etc. and performance might be affected etc. or..a nosey co-worker spills the beans, so keep it discrete ! :D

I eventually left the Bar job, as it was becoming to much.

FYI: you can ALWAYS call the revenue, especially in your case, with two jobs, you can custom-balance your tax credits between both places, such as, have ALL your credits for the one company,or 50/50 OR 60/40 and so on..

    hope it helps.

I think you need to start your job first, as, the Revenue wont know about the new job until they register you

Years ago (the good days) I told my employer I was taking a 2nd job to save for a mortgage as what they were paying me wasn't enough.
A few red eyed disheveled morning later I was brought in for a big rise, still kept the 2nd job mind.

If you don't want them to know, they don't need to, but as RobertHopkins says above sometimes the revenue does things you haven't asked them to do and that might let the cat out of the bag.
If you're working for the opposition or otherwise in a compromising situation it might not go down well.
As for emergency tax, you're only paying that to the end of the year and you can do a tax return and claim it back.

In regard to E. Tax thats what I was assuming. By going on E.Tax id assume that revenue wouldent let my employer know?

Eh? Revenue issue tax credit certs to employers when requested to by an individual registering an employment or changing their credits/rate band about due to multiple jobs or marital status. They also send out certs when a completed part 3 of a P45 (register new employment) is received or the new employer has requested it using some other channel.
New employers are not provided with details of any other employments on file or any other personal information; they only get details of credits and rate band assigned to them.

Lots of people have multiple jobs and split their credits/rate bands however they wish all the time.

However, if they send a certificate splitting tax credits at this stage, wont they know that youve obviously started a new job?
Still, a little unclear about this, sorry about this!

So would I be correct in saying I should get a Nil Tax Cert sent to my new employer and thus avoid any revenue documentation or chnage of tax credits or SRCOP being divided?

It could be anything. From Revenue removing a miss claimed credit to a joint assessed couple moving credits/rate bands about. Or even a reduction in in credits due to non paye income.

If you are that worried about it, just get the second job registered with Revenue and ask that no credits or rate band be assigned to it meaning everything earned with the second job will be charged at the 41% rate.
