Is there any rule or reason why F1 cars don't have the built in jacks in the cars like they do in Indy?

I would imagine that its to cut down on the number of people allowed to work on the car on pitroad

I think it's to do with weight. It was tried before in F1 but never caught on. Indy use it because they are restricted in the amount of mechanics they can use on a pit stop. To be honest I think F1 need to look at this one again. I think I counted 4 per corner on a f1 car to 6 in total on a Indy stop.

Three per corner (gun man and two tyre changers), two fuel men (one on the nozzle and another to bear the weight of the unit), two jack men and the "lollipop" man so 17 mechanics per stop

During one of the Monico pitstops it looked a bit dodgy, was it a Kimi pulling out past Force India mechanic who pulled his legs in

and in Indycar the driver behind can't drive over any of the guy's pit box in front of him to short cut...not sure of any rule like this in F1 although they could just run over the wheel gun hose! I'd think it'd be great to have something like that in F1 where they can't touch any part of the guy's pit area in front.

I always hated the fact that the team, at either the start or the end of a pit lane had a straight run in or out of the pit box. Can't remember how they choose who goes where but always remember Ferrari in their hay-day getting choice.

    -. . ...- . .-. / --. --- -. -. .- / --. .. ...- . / -.-- --- ..- / ..- .--.

It's done by Constructors' Championship positions from the year before. When did Ferrari get a choice? I dont remember them having it at any point

Would imagine to keep the numbers down for pitstops. It's tight enough as it is with 30 or more pit stalls and so many stops under yellow with the entire field coming in.

actually just thinking about this, I remember last year there were 2 front jackmen and 2 rear jackmen for some teams ( i think Ferrari and Mclaren)

What was the point of that? who is going to break a jack? and if they break the wing/difuser, then they would be screwed anyway...

was it that the max number of pitmen was not reduced (after the refueling ban), and they said that they might as well use the 2 men for something...?

McLaren are the only team i can remember recently being allowed to swap. When they were Disqualified they should have been using the smaller garaged last pit stop, but were let use a bigger garage near the front to accommodate their extra gear.

I don't see any reason to reduce the number of mechanics.

It would be cool to see a shootout between an F1 pit crew and an Indy pit crew

Nah, 1 person per wheel for Indycar would make it moot. Well, unless the F1 team was McLaren and each car had to drive a lap without a tyre falling off :pac:

I'd say more than 17.. they usually have one mechanic adjusting the front wing on both sides if they change tyre compound. Then theres the starter guy who's there just incase of a stall. Usually that guy's a rear tyre holder that just spins around, but for some reason there's a person there holding the trolly that the starter is on and that tyre guy is still needed to use it..

only if it's like a nascar pitstop

They should bring back refuelling but only with a nascar style can.
That'd make pit stops a lot more interesting!

Well I certainly wouldn't want to be near the pit-lane when they are doing it

1)Considering how much fuel gets spilled by the Nascar boys
2)The fuel nozzle in the F1 is right over the engine/exhaust area

    BOOM :pac:

    Box office baby!
