If you live in the country that is.. is anyone really plagued with midges out in the evening for a photo walk and if so, have you any tips on keeping them at bay. They really ruin evenings outside..

Got eaten alive by the bastards the other night shooting a sunset in Doolin. Luckily, I don't react too badly to the bites, and my daughter somehow wasn't bitten at all.

I don't have any practical advice (other than swatting at them like a lunatic), but I found this old thread with some suggestions:

    Do you smoke ?
if I remember correctly from years ago this was a good deterrent.

Non smoker, bought 3 different types of repellent the other day and none work.

I bought a no-see-um jacket and head net from the US:

Repellent works for the hands for me. The mesh is so fine it cuts down on your visibility a lot and gets warm.

Eat lots of raw garlic, nothing will come near you....and I mean nothing! :D Also if you cant stomach that tea tree oil mixed with citronella oil will work too.
Dont drink the oil  Just rub it around your neck ears, arms etc. haha!

I have some stuff from Thailand which works a treat.

Also, citronella candels or even tiger balm/deep heat will work - makes you stink badly. (even after washing)

    Thanks for starting this thread.

Last year, we spent the week-end in Bray and one my ports of call was to Powerscourt, I love waterfalls and was really looking forward to it, we went out in the evening time, paid at the gate, parked up, got out of car and bearly made the waterfall and back without being eaten alive, the place was infested with midges, I got a few photos and ran from the place, couldn't even change the lens as I was afraid they'd destroy the inside on my camera.

I was never more so disappointed.
