    Hi all,

I have a golf lying up for over 2yrs now! The reason it's lying up is because it was overheating & it was a hard task to get fixed. We tried 2 garages and 1 put a 2nd hand thermostat in, long story.. then we took it to a fairly reputable garage, there they took the engine completely out and looked for blockages, put a new timing belt on and a few other bits and pieces, it still didn't sort the problem so we went back again & they took the thermostat out, still No joy!:( Now my brother in law says that they were all wrong and it's the matrix system that's the problem! I've never actually heard of it before..

All this overheating did come on very quickly. Steam would come out from the top part of the bonnet (not at the radiator part at the resivour part), the gauge would rise. We thought it was a leak somewhere & got a few thing's replaced like the resivour (sorry spelling!). Anyone have any idea's as would it be the head gasket or this matrix system? Thank you kindly for taking the time to read this, if you need any extra info just ask! :)

You could always completely bypass the heater matrix by joining the 2 pipes going through the bulkhead completely and see if it solves the problem

I'd be wondering where your brother in law got that from, maybe bring it back to the garage you went to and mention it.

He's been around cars all his life, and especially likes golfs. He actually wanted to buy it off me but the hubby really likes it.

Hmm... Coolant ever drop? Was that what caused the overheating? The coolant missing?

To be honest, cut your losses and buy a better car, unless it has some sort of sentimental value. Heater matrix is a dash out job.

When it would overheat it was boiling water like lot's of steam coming out from up the top of the car, then we'd have to refill it. The garage took the whole engine out onto the ground, they were looking for a blockage because thats what they though it was. The car just ended up lying there after that. Now we're looking for a better car and this was a lovely car, only 88,miles, in great nick nice looking car. I wouldn't mind paying up to 450 500 to get her going back good. It was just the other day that the brother in law mentioned something about the matrix system thats causing all these problems,, he said it would be 4days work and 500 and he'd fix it. But I'm a bit afraid if was the head gasket that needed to be done instead of this matrix system (I honestly have no idea what this even is!) I'd be done alot of money.

How can you stick to the car that sits in the driveway for 2 years?
Don't get me wrong, but i like my car because i drive it. Being attached to non-driving car is a bit weird...
