Type 2 Diabetes and surgery

New to this forum and looking for input please. I've been attending the diabetes clinic locally for the past 2 months following a high glucose in a blood sample. Haven't seen the doctor yet, appointment 6 weeks away.

My last hba1c was 58 and all I'm doing is more exercise and a much improved diet. Weight is down by 4-5 kg to a slim 122kg,on no meds.

I went in for a pre op assessment today for a minor abdominal hernia due to be done next week and they won't operate until I see the main man at the diabetes clinic. Wasn't given a clear reason as to the postponement of the surgery.

Assuming I have type 2 how would this affect surgery? I'm baffled.
