A friend is looking to get a 2000ish Yari's as a first car and to learn to drive in.

Any known problems on these ?

Also what is the plural of Yaris ? Yarii ?:D

check the exhaust system on them, very thin, rot/rust out easy.

check the headunit/radio works - the original toyota one goes in them for no reason.

Check for metallic noises at startup for loose timing chain or problematic tensioners. If noise goes away after oil pressure is built up, it is fine.

Check for failing waterpump bearings causing high pitch noise when rev engine up.

Check if there is any play in waterpump pulley.

Check obvious yellowish headlamps due to plastic + sunlight

    Check for noisy gearbox bearing

Check engine revs up smoothly and lively due to vvti issues

Can't think anythting else. They are quite reliable, practical, easy to drive but dull cars. (I drive one at the moment)

Sounds like a perfect learner car so!

The reason the head units go is water damage, the ariel on the roof leaks and lets water run along the wires, we changed loads and would always seal the roof too

Ideal as a learner car, give naff all trouble as most have been driven handy.

Handbrake cables can sag, leading to no handbrake eventually. Discoloured headlights have been covered along with the VVTi (some VVTi engines suffer piston ring wear leading to excessive oil consumption) I haven't heard of the 1SZ FE suffering this mind you :)

Watch for bodged repairs, crashed repairs etc. Most will have suffered car park scars.

My ladyfriend has one and I absolutely hate it :pac:
