Reshuffling the bag

    Im going to buy a 52 degree vokey today, i've 56 and a 60 cleveland cg15s. and a 47 degree callaway x-tour forged pw.

i want to try the 4 wedge system for a bit and see how i get on.

the only thing is i can't decide is what club to get rid of.

I've a 2 and a 3 iron of which both i might not use or only use once in a round.

The 2 iron i like off the tee when i want to play safe, its a maxfli revolution red dot

the 3 iron i never use off the tee but might use it for a second on par 5 or long par 4. Its a callaway x-tour forged which matches the rest of my set.

what do you guys think, get rid of the two or the three?

Ill probably play around with both options depending on courses and what tees are being played (ie the greens on the heath might have me play the 2 iron a bit more than the whites where the three might come into play for the par 5s and par 4s sometimes.)

    any thoughts?

Drop the two iron. You'll use the 52 more and have more options from 120 & in.

Any hybrids in the bag? Asking cos i've a 4 hybrid and 5 iron in the bag and there's very little in them, just a softer landing with the hybrid.
I'd throw out the 3 iron, solely because you depend on the 2 off the tee,and the yardage loss you'd recuperate with the extra wedge. Don't know your yardages but you've surely every distance under 180 covered in mid to short irons, and there are very few ~600 yarder par 5's in the country.

Im thinking of the 3 iron as well, i don't like hyrids. Its just a personal thing, i prefer the feel of long irons to hybrids and when im striking it well i can stop them quick enough as i've a high ball flight.

A man of my own heart regarding hybrids. Do you ever hit the 2i off the deck on long par 4s, par 5s? Much difference between itself and the 3i in terms of distance and consistency and is there much of a step up then to your 3w? At present I'd be inclined to drop the 3i and keep the 2i for those tight tee shots and long par 3s where you're into the breeze.

However another suggestion would be to sell the 56 and 60 Cleveland wedges and use the proceeds to buy 52 and 58 vokeys. If the 58 has a moderate amount of bounce it should double as both a sand wedge and lob wedge and give you a nice range of 47, 52, 58 while allowing you to keep both your 2i and 3i.

the 2 iron is a 19 degree loft and the 3 iron is a 21 degree loft but the 3 is slightly heavier so im thinking yardage is only 10 in the difference.

Im gonna try the 52 vokey anyway because i've never had a vokey, always been cleveland because i love their shape and aesthetics.

I definitly have a gap in my wedges which i think needs to be addressed asap, im half thinking if buying two more wedges after throughout the summer and play between a 3 and 4 wedge system and see which suits better.

Whatever suits you best obviously, but I saw an interesting interview recently with Tom Lewis where he said he'd gone back to 3 wedges from 4 as he was confusing himself with all the choices he had when he changed to 4.
Also I think it was at The Players that Sky Sports had a look into Rory's bag and he only carries 46, 54 & 60 as his wedges.

Personally, I've never really learned how to use a lob wedge and only ever carried a 56 deg. I'd sometimes try the 60 when messing or practising but rarely in real life. Currently carry a 52 & 56 but for some reason hardly ever use the 52. Would love to try a 54 & 58 combo but always fear that I'll miss my trusty 56 !:)

Having similar thoughts myself, have a 19 hybrid & 21 7-wood. Difference between them is marginal so thinking of dropping 1 from the bag.

Completely confused about what to add instead though.

At the 1 end I'm contemplating either a 5-wood or loftier hybrid,on the other end, thinking of a new wedge, but have 48,52 & 58 so not sure I see any benefit to be added there either

    2 iron?

    You crack head

There was no question here, get rid of that **** and get that wedge in!

If its only for being safe off the tee, thats what a 3 wood is for :D

Straightest club in the bag tho....

Bear in mind that whichever club you take out will be the one you need most in the next round you play...

Make your 3 wood the straightest then :P

I didn't even know they made 2 irons anymore. For me a wood is the safe bet off the tee, and has the added functionality of being useful around the course on par 3's, par 5'sand into the wind par 4's etc.

    I doubt I could use a 2 iron anywhere bar a tee.

Going by the "...." I think your at that point where you know your answer, but your just not liking it :D

I actually went away from 4 wedges and went back to two woods.

What's the thought process behind the four wedges as a matter of interest? I see your buying a gap wedge which in my opinion should be in everyone's bag.

My wedge system is like this

52* - Great club. Alot of options from within 100yards and around the green.
    • Full wedge from bout 90-100 yards
    • Three quarter wedge from about maybe 70-80
    • Half and smaller swings for short to pin distances
    • Bump and run around the green
    • High chip, low chip

    56* - Sand wedge
    From bunkers
    • Shots where I want alot of height and little run from around 60 yards
    • Shots where I want to get alot of check
    • Shots from off the green with little green to work with

    60* - Lob wedge
    Emergency club
    • Flop shots over hazards, mounds, bunkers from around the green to pin
    • Full shots from around 40-50 yards
    • Where I need lots of height and no run
    • Shots with little green to work with

I dont know where I would fit another wedge in. Would we call a pitching wedge part of the wedge system?

I think you do include the PW in the numbers so that would be a 4 wedge system, ie PW (probably around 46 deg), 52, 56 & 60

    aaaaa ok

I always see people mentioning a fourth wedge with a high 40* wedge and I'm always like " wheres the PW"

    Blonde moment ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,468 ✭✭✭matt-dublin

    Range of shots as follows:

    60:
    yardage on full is 70-85
    Shots:greenside bunkers, short range pitching

    56:
    yardage on full is 90-110
shots: mid range pitching, check chips and high soft ships, short range bunkers

    47 (PW):
    yardage on full is 125-138
shots: pitching, bump and run chips

so i do need a 52 in there for the kind of 3/4 100-125 shots, and also for around the green for versatility.

i think im gonna take the 2 iron out of the bag for a few rounds, and then try the 3 iron and see how i get on but i really think the day in question will define what club i use so ill leave them in the boot of the car in case i wanna swap :)

I used my new GPS thing last night and decided, against all gut feeling, to trust it.

I was not aware that I hit a full gap wedge 110yards.

My PW was measuring at 120 yards.

    Thats mental
