Hi, what type of engine oil should I get for a 1.9 TDI golf? The oil light came on this morning. I went through the owners manual and it recommends using VW 507.00 compatible oil.

Can I buy any oil from a garage suitable to this? Synthetic/ semi synthetic?

As long as it has the 507.00 spec on the can you can use it.

507.00 spec oils are a fully synthetic long life 5w30 grade oil. But be careful as not all synthetic 5w30 oils meet the spec. So check the listings on the can carefully.

Thanks George, appreciate that. Hopefully won't be to difficult to find some VW 507.00 spec oil.

Finding it shouldn't be a problem. Finding it well priced is a different story. Where are you located?

Portlaoise today? Would you recommend a particular brand?

Not really, Castrol and Fuchs are the first fill suppliers to VW but any recognised brand that meets the spec will be ok. Bradshaws in Portlaoise were doing Castrol Edge 4L cans for €39.50 recently but I think the price may have gone up in the last week.

Are you buying oil to top up or are you going to change the oil and filter yourself?

Oh just to top up. It's getting serviced July 6th so no need to change it myself!

It goes without saying that you don't continue to drive it with the oil light on either.
