Is a receipt for a full license sufficient?

Will a receipt from the Tax Office showing that I've applied for a license suffice if I'm stopped by the Gardai? I'd have my passport too to confirm it relates to me.

I'm just going to guess the answer is "no". And "as long as you don't get a strict Garda, you'll be sound".

Not until you're in possession of a valid physical licence, as far as I know.

Technically you are supposed to carry your licence. Realistically you would be fine.

Me and my mother both had to renew our liscences a couple of months back (her 10 year full liscence was about to run out and I was getting my second provisional with my fail cert from my test) and they told us to carry the receipt incase we got stopped to show that we were actually liscenced to drive - never happened but my mam said once you have the receipt as an acknowledgement you're fine

Thanks for the replies. Got my license in 3 days (great service!) so I wasn't long driving with just the receipt.

Will be good to know in ten years time though.

There is a difference between renewing licence, and getting a new one.
If you are a fully qualified driver, and your license expired, you apply for a new one. If you are newly qualified driver, you are actually applying for full license for the very first time. You would have to be very unlucky to have a guard against you in that case, but - so you know - you are not fully qualified unless full driving license is issued to you.

I did drive on the receipt, too, but legally everyone should wait until the actual license is posted.
