Congratulations! Very soon after you register your baby's birth you will be receive a PPS number for the baby in the post from the Department of Social Protection. As soon as you have that number, you can apply for the baby to be added to your medical card. http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/Find_a_Service/maternity/

I just tried this, the application tells me, I already have a card and I cannot apply in the new babies name as he is too young. So I sent a question through the contact form.

Posters on this forum have mentioned being able to add the baby to their medical card over the phone, as long as they have the baby's PPS Number. You could try the lo-call 1890 252 919 or contact your local health office.

Right I just called them there on the number above, then choose option 1.

I was told to write a letter stating:

I wish to add 'babies name' to my medical card.
    Medical card Number :
    Baby's Dob:
    Baby's PPS no:

Signed by the medical card holder (s).

Include a photocopy of the baby's Birth Cert and PPS Sheet.

    Send to:
    Client Registration,
    PO Box 11745
    Finglas
    Dublin 11.

    Hope this helps someone.

If you haven't sent it already, send the letter by Registered Post. It will cost a bit but well worth it!

    Of course!!!!

I was surprised I was allowed to send photocopies this time, al they birth certs the lost were originals.

is the above info still valid does anybody know

my sister had her card renewed and her 1st child who is aged 4 a few weeks ago,
even though she was worried she might not succeed in the re application as her circustances had changed slightly and because of whats in the news about people losing their cards
she had a baby in the last month and when i asked her did she apply for a medical card she thought the free care for 5yr old would apply soon, but when i told her thats not till the middle of next year shes half afraid to draw the whole thing on her self as she is a bit nervous of losing her other 2 cards

No, I think she should just the letter away and get the baby added to her card as such.

Yes the above address is correct still. I just sent a letter this year to add a baby and it was done via normal post. No phone calls or e-mails. I just wrote a letter outlining all necessary details and sent it. Got a card in the post a good few weeks later. Until the card arrived, the baby was covered under the mother's medical card.
