Dedicated Business Broadband - The Options

The smaller wireless operators will largely use non licenced gear. This is fine in a rural area where there is no interference. The risk is that higher end consumer gear...eg 802.11N could interfere over time in the 5ghz band and that you have to go door to door in the area begging people to turn off the higher channels.

The savings are worth it. You should look at owning your own high structure ( building or mast) as part of your future connectivity plans. Nobody can **** with height! High enough in South Donegal and you can consider a shot across from Mayo.

The operator can ping in at 5.8ghz which is above the WIFI - G / N ac freqs or you can disable those freqs on your home gear.

How many people are working in your house again Condi ?? :p 5.8 is better across a water shot if that is what you need.

If you had access to a property located close to the exchange you could get the DSL connection there and put up your own 5.8 ghz wireless link for small Bobs, but from what I know the max upload with a business DSL connection would be around 1 Meg which may not be enough for reps accessing your servers.

You seem to have got your head around a lot of issues there, fair play.

Could you PM me the providers you were talking to that were using the unlicensed spectrum please..........

Very few exclusively use 2.4/5.8, they may have some years back. They use Licenced links eg 6-7 Ghz STM-1 pairs like these below for long links and backhaul and the 2.4/5.8 gear on short hops to customers.

By going higher they can deal with potentially messy 'across water' issues as the beam is narrower as you go higher.

..................That is, those providers that can see themselves affording the exorbitant annual licence fee year after year. See Comreg see this as a cash cow, upping the price every year for a few strokes of the pen. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's anything up to ~€1200 per year (in the UK closer to £50). This is holding back providers, lots are using unlicenced kit because it doesn't pay to use licenced. It's a huge mistake that the communications regulator is wholly focused on making money, it's not doing the market any good.

Add to the cost of the links the inordinate processing time for point to point licences ( 6 months) and the preferential treatment of a small number of licenced link installers

OP : We have a 2Mb leased line [fair enough non contended]. We have 30+ users. We have no connectivity issues and very few slow downs. We just blocked the **** out of the data heavy non business websites [facebook, youtube, internet radio, audio/video streaming sites]. We also have at least 1 or 2 remote users connecting in via LogMeIn at most times. Our company AUP allows employees limited and revocable personal access to company internet connection, once it doesn't have a detrimental affect on core business.

On that 2Mb link, we also host several public websites, ftp servers AND real time data replication of core data [Exchange, SQL, FS, AD] to off site DR location.

I think your first look should be an updated AUP. This is free to cheap.
