Looking at dropping the GTi about 30/40mm since gettingvthe alloys sprayed.

Is there much difference in the many coil overs on the Market?

Looking at FK Automotive v VMAXX at the minute.

    Any thoughts or opinions?

Depends what fk ones your going for eg ak streets, highsports etc.
V-maxx are a more upper market brand compared to budgets.
If your only lowering 30-40mm I'd stick with the cheaper ones or else springs.

If your looking for a 40mm max drop then its pointless buying coilovers IMO.

A good set of matching -30/40mm shocks and springs will give a much more comfortable ride and a better long term service life.

The cheaper coilovers you mentioned above are on the market for no other reason then allowing cars to be lowered as much as possible for the full on stance/felt spec look. If handling is your priority, which, if you bought a GTI, it would be, then you'll need to be spending a lot more then the price of FK/V-Maxx/JOM etc.

    Thanks for the opinions!

I ended up purchasing a set of Jom coilovers last week so have them siting in the house waiting to be fitted..

After having a chat with me mechanic, I prob will be dropping it lower as I am mainly based around the city centre these days so the roads aren't too bad!!

My advice? Get your money back money back before it's too late.I was in a car with JOMs fitted before and the are probably the worst coil overs i've ever experienced.

It's a GTI? so a performance car,why would you take out the factory suspension for budget coilovers? If you are going to upgrade the suspension on a car that is built for 'go' not for 'low and show' then you need to be looking at names like H&R.KW,Koni etc.

I'd also be of the opinion that JOM's are a bit sh1t for a GTi, that's a nice quick car, why bring it down with a bad suspension?

That's fair enough as yer opinions.. :)

Have been in a number of cars with Joms on a range of roads and it wasn't too bad. Worst case scenario, I replace them with the originals again and I sell them on...

Have you been in a number of of cars with decent coilovers in them on a range of roads ?:D

JOM's are brutal, they have no handling quality whatsoever. The car will probably roll more on those than with the standard suspension, allbeit it will be lower.

I'm putting a set of D2's into my Mk4. They're more expensive than the JOM's/FK's but the car will handle much better and sit a little lower.

Coilovers are not deemed as 'ok' just because you didn't find them bad on certain roads or whatever, I think what people are getting at is that cheap coilovers are ok if you want a certain look for standard car, i.e low/stance etc.

A golf GTI is designed to be a hot hatch and is all about handling. Fitting JOM's will make the handling worse. Only proper, fully adjustable, coilovers along with the likes of uprated anti roll bars and a proper alignment set up to suit can improve the handling.

V-Maxx upper brand??? That is laughable, they are the worst out of the lot, Avoid, if you are only going down 30mm or so get yourself a H&R cup kit, No need for cheap coilovers at that height.

Well since this thread has been resurrected, unsure of why after two months, I've had the coilovers fitted and to be honest the ride comfort hasn't been too badly sacrificed. Cause it's so low I just gotta remember that potholes and high ramps are not my friends!!

Sorry not used of a board been so quite on the first page lol, didnt check the date, is it a mk4 golf? Once you go below 50mm you will start rubbing the ARB and the sumps are made out of the worst aluminium VW could find, Ive been through it all this was GTI, Im still a massive fan of mk4's but they have fallen into the wrong hands and are been ruined....

It is not laughable actually, they are more upper market compared to budget's like fk streets, tuning art etc.

Your handbrake cable is very low to the ground.

Was quickly sorted! Regarding the question on the previous page I really dont know how low I had it, That was on FK coilovers with helpers out, so low enough. BTW the 3 pics are of my own car when I had it and was at different stages of wheels etc!

Having had all sorts of coilovers in a few different cars I am of the opinion that Joms are the best of the cheap crap, but none came anywhere near of the KW's I had in my S3, there is no comparision between high end and low end.

Worse coilovers are Vmaxx, I wouldnt put them on a wheelbarrow and TA-Technix AKA TA ****nix.
