I've a wedding coming up soon which is a Black Tie event (I'm going to the wedding itself and afters) .... I've no idea what the protocol is?

Help and experience would be appreciated :)

Might I be able to get away with a black suit? (I would really like to buy a suit that I could wear afterwards - i.e work etc). Tie or Dickiebow?

If your trying to get away with a business suit definitely wear a bow tie otherwise you risk looking like an undertaker who got lost on the way to work. My guess is that as long as your not in the wedding party or immediate family wearing a reg. suit should be okay.

You know the couple getting married. Usually people that have a blacktie code want everyone to look the same. And it is more of an event. You don't want to be the one that isn't dressed in blacktie. A tux is a dressier suit with a satin lapel. Also wear a dress shirt with black studs.

A dinner jacket with black silk lapels (no buttonhole in the lapel), white shirt with dress studs and a bow tie is the 'black tie' standard. Trousers plain front without turn-ups with a silk stripe on the outside seam to match the silk on the lapels. I would advise against getting a plain black suit as you will look like a mortician if you wear it.

I'd suggest you buy one if you'd wear it out to restaurants or out and about in the evening. Can give you quite a bit of tone.

If it's a black tie dress code then I'm afraid there really is no alternative to a tux, dress shirt and bow tie. I've only ever been to one myself and it was a real pain in the ass having to wear one. It looked like a waiters convention, but that's what the couple wanted, so that's what they got.
