Is paying for a 'proofread' not unethical? Whats to stop the person 'proofing' the thesis basically rewriting it to a much higher standard? Any financial inducements whatsoever in a personal academic project is fundamentally wrong.

No, I don't believe it is and I don't appreciate the comment.

As a student who deferred a dissertation for medical reasons, I cannot afford the £3,000 I was quoted merely for supervision.

I am looking for someone to talk through some of the issues I'm having with, someone with more experience than I. What I am not looking for is unsolicited commentary, which is actually a front for ethical grandstanding.

I would ask anybody who can recognise the distinction between (implied) fraudulence and guidance to get in touch.
This is a discussion forum, not adverts.ie. By posting a thread, you are implicitly soliciting commentary on the subject matter of your OP, whether you agree with that commentary or not.
The respondent made a not entirely unreasonable point, calling it "ethical grandstanding" is overly defensive and, quite frankly, very rude.

Hmm. the original post seems to have gone but.... I think, no know, that your wrong there. Proofreading a thesis is a MUST. If someone can afford a professional then all the better. And yes, pay them. Pay them lots. On the very first page of my phd theres a small typo. They breed....
I make all my phd students and urge all masters to get professional, proper, proofreading done.
To say "any financial inducement...is wrong" is breathtakingly broad

Proofreading is fine but getting a professional to 'polish' your PHD is immoral. If I was an average screenwriter, and got Aaron Sorkin to basically rewrite it, would that not be considered plagiarism? The money swirling about makes it immoral as the middle class PHD student on mammy & daddy's money has a huge advantage over the working class stiff working a 30-40 hour week to make ends meet.
