Golf Gti MkV Engine Squealing Noise

Intermittent high pitched squealing noise starts when the car has been running for 15 minutes or more, goes away when I accelerate, stays whether or not the car is in gear or not. Is also there when the car is idling once the engine has been running for awhile. When I switch off the ignition it whines on for a couple of seconds followed by a kind of hissing noise.

VW mechanic couldn't even give a guess, said they'd need to take it in and look at it. I've googled it and a failed PCV valve/crankcase breather(?) looks like it might fit, anyone on here have any experience of this? Thanks.

What's the condition of the auxiliary belt do you know and when was the timing belt last done?

Does it stop when you turn off the internal fan/air circulation?

Does it go away when you turn off your a/c?

The timing belt hasn't been done after 72k kms.

It's unaffected by the air circulator or air con, definitely coming from the engine bay, possibly on the driver's side.

Edit: I'm not sure about the condition of the auxiliary belt

Sounds more like a belt. My PCV failed and it didn't give and squealing. I'd guess aux belt before going for anything more complex.

Really doesn't sound like a belt, more like some kind of bearing or air being released, like a kettle boiling. I've also noticed that my oil and fuel consumption (fuel particularly) has been higher over the last 2-3 months. The hissing noise as the engine winds down is also definitely new.

I get a high pitched whining when I turn on the engine cold but as soon as the engine heats up it's good to go

sounds like a boost leak to be honest?

I remember my mechanic was looking into a similar problem a few years back with an Audi 1.8T. Which leads me to....

Thanks for the replies, garage informed me yesterday evening that the PCV valve had failed and they're going to replace it today. Only thing that has me slightly worried is that that's the one thing I asked them to check, I hope they've left it running for awhile to verify that that was actually the cause of the noise.

From google it seems like there was a recall on these valves on some '07 cars in the US but no such luck here.
