Unblocking an Irish blackberry to use in new Zealand

Hi I'm moving to new Zealand from Ireland in a couple of weeks and was looking to unlock my blackberry Curve 8520 phone to bring with me and use a new Zealand sim in it. I was told I can unlock it but it still won't work over there..is this right or will it work? Has anyone already done this?
