MMDS, UPC and multiroom cabling.

    Hi,

Need some definite advice (Ive asked around but got different answers).

I currently have UPC TV (MMDS) with recording in one room.

I want to run a cable for a second UPC Recordabale Box in another room.

Can I simply split the cable coming from the antenna and run the this split signal to the new box

    OR

Do I need to split the signal between from the power supply and the existing UPC box and feed this split signal to the second box?

    OR

Are neither of these approaches correct?

    Thanks,
    M

simply split the signal from your upc point in the room. you shouldn`t lose any strenght in signal. i have mine spilt to three rooms with no loss of quality or BB.

I dont actually have a "point".

The cable comes through the wall from the antenna into the power supply and on into the box. I presume you mean split the signal going into the box?

    Are you talking about MMDS?

Firstly, to get a second UPC recording box in another room - UPC upon request will come to your house and run the cable and install the correct type of splitter.

If you really wanted to do it on your own, if you have MMDS you should have a PSU for the MMDS antenna usually located in the same location the UPC box was installed initially. This would what looks like a power brick with a coax cable in/out, the in comes from the antenna and the out go into your UPC box.

My understanding you would just need the correct f-type splitter like this between your UPC box and antenna PSU.

One output to your existing box, and the other to your new cable going to your new location. Get good quality coaxial cable and connectors!

Unsure why you would go through this effort when UPC will do it for you :)

Kerbdog, you got it in one. I have UPC via mmds with pvrs in 2 rooms. The set-up is exactly as you have described. I also agree that the OP should get UPC out to set it up. If there's ever a problem, the let UPC solve it.

I believe you can also break into the cable between the PSU and the antenna should that be closer to the room you want to bring a feed into but your cable splitter would need to have a power passthrough in/out which you would put inline with the antenna/PSU and the non-passthrough out connection to your new point.

Thanks for the advice. The reason I'm doing it myself is UPC want to charge me >100 euro in cabling and activation fees.

I would have thought if the box was supplied by UPC, it should be active. If not supplied by UPC then the card should be cancelled.

Anyway yes split it between the power supply at the UPC receiver, NOT between the power supply and the rooftop MMDS aerial.

Another issue that might arrise is that the power supply needs to be on ALWAYS for the other TV to work. So if you go to bed and plug out the main TV, the signal to the second TV will stop working. The MMDS dish on the roof needs power to work, which is supplied via the power inserter.

By the way by doing this each TV will get less than half the initial signal. If picture breakup starts to become a problem, then call UPC. They will either install a bigger MMDS dish or a second dish to feed the second box.
