Have to say that this surely rules out any chances they had of doing well. He's an incredible loss and his presence alone will be missed no end.

Very hard to call Ulster this year but not in a good way. Would like to see Derry getting their act together and giving it a great rattle

Ridiculous to say this rules Tyrone out from doing well. Kavanagh on his day is among the best attacking footballers in the country but in all honesty he only really was able to play at the level we still imagine him to be at once in last year's championship, against Roscommon in the Round 4 qualifier. He's also, if I'm being blunt, a defensive liability and most true midfielders beat him in the air.

What it'll mean is Tyrone will be playing a more defensive game this championship. In other words, the style of football that won them three All-Irelands in six years. Tyrone have generally played much more expansive football as of late, at times with a looseness you'd never associate with Tryone football, and losing their star attacker will prove less of a blow than some think it will.

Didn't think they'd do well anyway personally, but this is a huge setback make no mistake. Was still by far (in my view) their best player last year in a championship where they were blown away by Dublin (even if he has had better seasons). Grand it may lead to a changed formation but still can't see them up to much. Cavanagh at his best was crucial to their chances of causing a few upsets this year imo

lol, they've played better without him than with him for two seasons.

A big blow for Tyrone, but there is mention of a retired player returning. Any ideas who this could be?

    Brian McGuigan.

The loss of Kyle Coney, Ronan O'Neill and now Cavanagh probably precludes Tyrone from mounting a serious assault on Sam - and that's not to assume they could have anyway.

I'm not sure they would have. This Tyrone team is in a transitional phase now, which was inevitable once the old warhorses from '03-'08 started to retire.

When you lose players like Dooher, Gormley, Jordan etc it's very hard to replace players like that, and it's unlikely that the young crop coming through will be as good. Simply because it's not often you get so many top notch players all coming through at the same time.

A similiar thing happened in my own county (Galway) that when those great players we had in the O'Mahony years moved on (Fallon, Donnellan, De Paor etc) we hadn't the same quality of players coming through. Some good players yes, but not good enough, and you need great players to win All-Irelands. Have Tyrone a new batch of Doohers, O'Neills and McGuigans coming through? Probably not.
