Hi all, I'm 23 years old, and I'm enrolled in an approved college course for the 2012/2013 year. Looking at the grant page it seems that I qualify. The only issue I have is that I'm living rent free in a house owned by a friend's parents.

I don't have a rent book and none of the bills are in my name so when the time comes for grant application, how can I prove that I'm living independently? I have other letters, from car insurance and phone bills, but will that be enough?

    when did you turn 23?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

    In December of last year.

You need ti have a bank statement, or a lease dated October of last year in your rental address, then they'll class u as independent.. If worst comes to worst they should take your insurance cert.

Also, if you previously applied for the grant while dependant in the last three years, you will still be classed as dependant mature rather than independant mature.

Collect together ALL documentation that shows your address

That's grand. I had a talk with the landlord and he said that he'll write me a letter if it becomes an issue. Doubt I'll be able to get a backdated lease but between that and the utility bills I hope it'll be enough to convince SUSI that I'm independent.
