Thanks for all the replies guys, I am looking for the coolant temp sensor first, if I have the same problem then I'll buy another part.
do you think it's easy to change this sensor? should I do it myself or is it better to bring the car to a mechanic? how much a mechanic would charge me if you have any ideas? thanks in advance.

    eBay?

If it's the engine I'm thinking about it's real easy - unclip wiring harness, unscrew old sensor, screw in new sensor, attach wires, fill with coolant. Done.

Any decent motor factor will have one of those sensors. Fairly easy to replace just make sure the engine is cold as the coolant will burn the hand of you!

GP Autobitz in Baldoyle.. would be similar to GSF but reasonably new and Billy is EX MERC/VW ..I have used them a few times and found them very god on their prices and can get quality parts

I think a coolant sensor is about 30 euro from a main dealer. There was an updated one which had a green top instead of black, which gave trouble IIRC.

Thanks guys for all your replies,

I ordered the part yesterday from a car part dealer in swords (got it today), quoted me 15 EUR for it meanwhile a VW dealer in Swords asked for 45 EUR.
I am a newbie regarding cars, this is the first time I bought a part for my car, the box was opened is that normal? and also the box doesn't mention VW or anything, is that normal too?

@sean1141: The top in the new part is black and has two connectors, should I be worried that the top is not green?

its a spurious part.. not a genuine vw part thats why there is no vw branding on the box. it will work fine but as they give a lot of bother i personally wouldnt bother with spurious one.

Thanks for all you replies folks, It's amazing how a small part can resolve a big issue, well a 15 EUR and a bit of DIY resolved my issue :D. Tks a lot for your help folks.

So VAG and other car makers have factories that make all the parts for the and never for anyone else?

OP the part could well be made by the same people who make for VAG. What make is the sensor? As long as the part isn't some cheap far eastern crap you should be alright.

there are loads of crowds that make parts for the vag group and other car makers. the thing is to know who makes the genuine stuff (oe) and then buy their branded stuff (oem) for example rear pads for a mk1 seat leon are made by mintex.

as a dealer part they will come in a vag group box and the pads themselves will have both the mintex and vag branding on them.

if you go into a motor factors and ask for mintex pads for the same car they will come in a mintex box with no vag group branding, but im sure you know that :D

i was talking about the sensor the op was asking about not spurious parts in general. as you said yourself there are a lot of cheap ones knocking about. these might not last 6 months then again they could outlast the car.

Sorry for hijacking the thread. I need to get a driver side wing mirror for a 02 golf.I was told this is going to cost about 500e as apparently its electric. It has a wire bit connecting it to the car. That bit is still there. But the case part is broken and the glass is ok. Any suggestions or where I might get one? I looked at micksgarage but none of the mirrors have the electric no the description. Does that matter!

    Thanks!

Try the local motor factors or Somora.

I take it the mirrors are electric adjusted and heated? I dont think folding mirrors were ever avilable on the golfs here..

Here is an electric one from micks garage.

You could also try a local breakers yard for one.
