Depth for membrane for chippings path??

Have to dig up piece of the lawn this week to put a path from the patio to the shed, I intend on removing the section of the lawn, putting down membrane, then chippings. So, just wondering, how deep do I need to dig down?

6-8 inches, put down some 804 hardcore over fabric, then chipping will have something to bind too and not move under foot, will need less chippings this way
