    Hi All,

I am just new to this thread and would much appreciate if someone could help me out with queries below

At first, do TAs at TCD always get hired on pro-rata basis.

Most importantly, what is a minimum hourly wage rate for TAs at first hiring and minimum numbers of weekly hours allocated to them.

Any response would be much appreciated.

    Thank you all of you.

    Atif

Since you haven't gotten a reply, I'll tell you what I know. I corrected homeworks and you're supposed to fill in a form to claim money at the end of the month. I'm not sure what the rate is since I only handed all my forms a few days ago. From what I've heard, the rate is somewhat arbitrary but you will get at least 10 euro an hour. I didn't do any tutorials but I heard you get 40 an hour; 20 for preparation and 20 for giving the tutorial.

(This is with the Maths Department but I'd say they'd be quite similar)

    Thank you so much Fringe.

So u believe that hourly rates at TCD for TAs depends on one's qualifications and post qualification experience and their assigned duties are just picky. They may have to anything as desired by Lecturer.

Another quick question into my mind: is there any employment contract for TAs stating minimum number of hours to be completed each week atleast?

I will be joining PhD programme this Autums at Business School so any furhter specific information is much appreciated.

Aslo, just elabore a little bit more about corrected homeworks?

If you are doing a PhD and if you are getting funding, then in some cases a certain number of hours per week (usually 6) of TA work is a condition of the funding and you don't get paid extra for it. In other cases, TA work is not a condition of the funding and anything you do is paid extra.

    Thank you Gae

TCD grants 8,000 per annum as a funding provided 6 hours of TA work for a whole academic year. So that means per hour rate is 25.64 provided there are 52 weeks in an academic year.

Please correct me if i m wrong

In other cases, do self-funded students get paid minimum of the above provided hourly rate (if correct of course) or there might be a different case for them.

    Any advise is appreicated.

I'm only an undergrad so I can't help you too much but the hours would completely depend on the amount/length of assignments I get. I'd say on average, I did about 5 hours a week.

    Gae,

Any ideas about hourly rate for self-funded PhD students incuding minimum number of hours permitted

TAs are referred as "assistant to lecturer", as stated at

    http://www.tcd.ie/undergraduate-studies/teaching-assistants-examiners/

Now is assistant to lecturer = assistant lecturer or is there any difference between both
