Swapping OS on HDDs in laptop

Any reason why this won't work -
I have a laptop running Win7 with an SSD in it, however I have some s/w that will only run on XP (I tried running it in compatability mode etc and it just wont work).
If I swap the SSD for a HDD (that I have lying around) and install XP on it followed by the s/w can I just swap the drives any time that I need to use the XP related s/w (not that often)?

What version of Windows 7 are you running?
If it's either Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate, then you will be able to set up a Windows XP Virtual PC under Windows 7.
