Do domestic outside webcams exist and does anyone know where I could get one?

Using Skype, I want to be able to check the outside of my house, cheaply and as hassle free as possible.

    Rgds

skype won't be any good to you for that as you wouldn't be there to answer it. :)

    google for foscam FI8918W.

i'll likely be getting some via aliexpress: http://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale/wholesale-FI8918W.html?SearchText=FI8918W&CatId=0&manual=y&SortType=price_asc&filterCat=301102%2C70811&SortType=y

there is a good review of it here: http://wireless-camera-review.toptenreviews.com/foscam-f18918w-review.html

if you shop around (and haggle), you should be able to get 4 of them for around €200 quid, give or take.

they will need power and i'd run ethernet to them as well rather than relying on wireless, but you could have them on the 4 corners of your house under the eaves and cover your whole property.

whilst they are technically not outside cameras, as long as they are not directly getting the full force of the weather, they will be fine. i have a mate who has 6 of them in his gaff and 4 are outside for the last year odd with no ill effects.

you can also link them together to have a single unified interface for all the cams you have, with ful pan/tilt functionality (about 270 degrees each i think) and even have them motion sensing and uploading to an FTP site for offsite recording of events, or sending you emails if anything happens.

just waiting to have a few quid in the bank so i can order mine to replace my existing standalone system as it's getting a bit long in the tooth.

That would be lovely but not as cheap as I would like.

But your suggestion has given me an idea - that I fashion a waterproof box of my own, and use a €16 webcam and a €5 USB extension lead. Should have the solution I want for €30.

    Thanks.

I like this idea very much. Thank you for this.

no problem, i've been looking into it for a while. :)

if you want a really low budget option you could use a normal webcam and some free software called yawcam to give you similar control over a regular webcam as you'd have with a security camera, such as direct feed via the web, alrts, notifcations and motion detection and that kind of thing.

personally though, having tried that i'll be going with a se of foscam's as described above in my last post. 4 of them, one on each corner of the house sheltered by the eaves.

i have an attic conversion and there are already 3 external nightvision cameras going to a regular HDD based standalone DVR security system installed up there, so it'll be fairly easy for my to wire them up with power and ethernet.
