Sky Box Issue

    Hi guys,

Quick question for the sky gurus... Since last night, my box is powering itself off (seemingly going to stand-by) after being on for 5 minutes. When I power it on, it's on channel 999 (the Sky Info channel), so I think it's more serious than regular stand-by.

Is my box on the way out? I'd say it's about 5 years old (it's a white Sky+ Pace box, not HD).

    Thanks in advance....

Strange !!! I have sky box approx 10 years and still alive and kicking.. Maybe you gotta go to menu , then go for sleep timer or something like that, Always normal when switched on, it goes to 999 channel.... I'm not very good at it, just giving my opinion... Hope it will work for you.. 5 years is grand..

have you tried the "plug it out for a min and plug it back in again" trick?

could be overheating. run a vacuum around the sides of the box to make sure the vents are not blocked.

Yep, first thing I did. Did it for 5 minutes too. I can do a longer test later. In fairness, it's always on, so that could be an issue. I'll go over it with the hoover tonight too.

Am not well up on Sky boxes, but ours started to get cranky some time last year and we couldn't get the green light to come on at all. About the same vintage as yours, not HD. I think there are two types of resets you can do - one is sort of a software refresh, which didn't work in our case, so we had to start from scratch and let it wipe everything. You'll lose your recordings doing that, however...worth a try if you don't mind losing stuff and if it works - did for us.

Ouch, it's about 50% full with stuff that I hope to watch eventually. :)
I'll try the hoover/cool down first to see if that helps.

    Fingers crossed.

At the time we rang the guys who installed it and they said it sounded like it was gone and were pushing towards a new one/contract, etc. No thanks. Didn't wipe straight away, tried other solutions first...if it can be done there's more satisfaction out of fixing it yourself anyway. Ours has been fine since, though if it went funny again I'd probably repeat the above before forking out for a new one. Standard box occasionally turns itself without warning. Not sure why.

What's the model number on the label? This is an important question because some models have known faults like this:
