Strings are really a preference thing, every one has their favourites. I normally just use a set of d'addario 45's on bass, not too light so I like the tension.

    Very true.

OP, it depends on the tone you want. Round wounds will give you a bright tone, where as flats will give you a warm mellow tone, not unlike a double bass. IMO, flats are great for blues, but might not fit the bill for rock. Strings definitely are a personal taste, as is the gauge.

I use DR Sunbeams (45-105), medium gauge. I find they give me the best of both worlds between rounds and flats, i.e. they are bright, but not too much so, and have a warm tone. Few shops in Dublin stock them, and in the shops that do stock them, they are expensive. I get mine on E Bay.

"Dunlops" might be worth a try. They are a bit similar to Sunbeams, are available in Dublin, and are reasonably cheap as bass strings go. I know Waltons stock them.

The bottom line is, getting your ideal strings takes some experimentation, and trial and error. Personally, I dont like Daddarios, but lots of people do.

EDIT : You might get some ideas/inspiration from the "Talk Bass" forum on Strings here :
