What depth of 804 to use?

    Hi
I'm laying a driveway around the house and out to the road entrance. I was goin to put in some 3 to 4 inch crushed rock as a base and some 804 on top.
What depth of 804 would you recommend? I Was going to use the 804 as a temporary driveway for a few years until I can afford to finish it off properly. maybe some natural stone
    (I'm not planning on tarmacadam)
Also Im planning on using some of that geotextile layer to stop weeds coming up where there is no traffic. Where should I include this? Maybe half the 804 beneath and half above this membrane. I wont have footpaths around the house so I was thinking of doubling it up adjacent to house to stop dampness and weeds. Anyone done something like this?

    Any advice, suggestions appreciated

    Cheers

I would suggest you use as little 804 as possible .Spend some time trying to get your3-4" stone level and roll it in if you can.If your stone is level and compacted you will need very little 804, one inch max. Then roll again.

i would put a clean stone over like a 10 mm chip as in the wet all the grit from 804 gets carried into the house

    Thanks lads.
That makes sense. Good that I wont need much.
Yeah a clean stone over the 804 would be a good job

dont use 804. you can use 2 inch down instead which is a way cheaper. 804 is for engineering projects and not needed on you job.

quarry screenings is also a good product for blinding your project.

JD That sounds like an idea. Looks like you saved me a few bob. So if I track 3-4 inches of 2 inch over the already well compacted 3 or 4 inch crushed rock? Would this be good?

We put down about inch and a half of 804 and was going to leave it but got nice 10 mill drainage stone and put a blinding down to see what it would be like, some people told me it would be to small but its a lovely cheap job and bedded in to the 804 very well and has got nice black and white stone through it and at €6 a ton was a very cheap job and solves the dust problem.

JD, Is quarry screenings like dust? does it go hard when rolled??

Quarry screening tends to be a different product depending what quarry you go to. it can vary from 40mm down to about 14mm down. It shouldnt just be quarry dust which is about 4mm down depending on the rock type and will rut badly in heavy rain.

Clause 804 is a spec for construction and theres no real need for you to pay for proper 804 when quarries will often have something similar which doesnt make the grade. Infact some quarries will load from the same stockpile and call it different things depending on who is buying!

you can also use clean 4 and 2 stone. make sure you get some thing dust less for top layer as it will be dragged all ove rhouse on shoes, dog and kids,

Should I place the geotextile layer on top of the 4 inch? It wouldn't cut it would it? if the 4 inch was well compacted?
    cheers

goe textile should always be the first layer don on the soil and build up the stone thereafter.

i reckon 4 down stone to make up the levels and finish with 2 inch down or screenings rolled in. the screenings will go like concrete after abit of rain!!!!!!
