Newb: FijiFilm Overnight Charger ?

    Hi all,

My son and I are using a Finepix S6500fd which uses AA rechargeable batteries. After losing our recharger in a house move I bought a "FijiFilm Overnight Charger" in Peats yesterday.

Although the recharger came with a set of four FujiFilm2000mAh by Hahnal, I also bought a set of four Mercury NiMH 2800mA/1.2V batteries to have a set of higher capacity batteries.

I left them to charge up all night last night but the light never went green from red, and when I finally removed them they were quite hot!

Could someone who has any knowledge please comment on the recharger and the batteries ? Is the light supposed to go green ? Is the heat normal ?

Neither of us use the camera a lot, my son sometimes likes to go out with his mates (he is 19) and take a lot of photos.

I only spent a total of about 20 quid. So if there is a much better set up then I would be grateful to receive any advice.

Is this the model you have?

If so, it is a completely dumb charger in the sense that it has no
    automatic shut-off, timer, delta-V etc...

The one I have shows the charging voltage as 2.8V (per cell pair)
and charge current as 150mA. The charge current is low enough
that you can safely charge a fairly flat battery overnight or even
longer. However, you will need to manage your batteries carefully.
If the batteries are almost full before you start charging, the
charger will tend to cook them.

I found the Hahnel 2000mAh AA cells were very good. They tended to
last longer than some other cells with a claimed higher capacity.

I also bought a set of four Mercury NiMH 2800mA/1.2V batteries to have a set of higher capacity batteries.

It will be interesting to see if they really do last longer than the Hahnel ones.

The two red LEDs only indicate that the pair of cells on that side is
charging. You can charge two cells on the left, two on the right
or four cells at once. You can't charge two cells by putting one on
each side. This is probably the only reason they included the LEDs.
Is the light supposed to go green ? Is the heat normal ?

Unless they have changed the design, the LEDs will never turn green.
It is normal for the cells to get quite warm after a few hours.
Neither of us use the camera a lot, my son sometimes likes to go out with his mates (he is 19) and take a lot of photos.

If you only use it ocassionally, it might be worth getting a set of low self-discharge
cells. See the other thread here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056654547

The Fujifilm charger is just about adequate as long as you aren't in a hurry
and you are able to manage your battery carefully. If you want something better,
you could get a smat charger which monitors cell voltage, current and temperature.
A smart charger will terminate the charge when the battery is full. This is very useful
when you just want to top-up a battery which is already partially charged. As with
most things, the best ones are the most expensive. I use a Maha/Powerex C9000
    which costs around €50.

Hey hbr ... a really interesting and very helpful reply.... Many thanks !

I will take your advice on board and see how it goes.

If I decide to go smart .. are the Maha ones commonly available ?

You can get them from Maplin (code: N60CY). The cheapest price I could find
was from eu.nkon.nl/ If you get one from the NL, it will come with a two-pin
    European plug.

The Technoline BL-700 is a good alternative and it costs a bit less.
