Garmin Edge 500 Mounting Tabs

The two mounting tabs on the back of my Edge 500 snapped off when removing it from the bike. This was during normal use, no rough handling (apart from Wicklow roads).

I've contacted Garmin support but I don't hold out much hope for a freebie replacement or fix as the unit is 18 months old.

From interweb searches it looks like a design/manufacturing flaw.

Anyone else had a similar experience? Any ideas how to mount it? The unit is 100% functional apart from the inability to mount it on the bike.

If it is a known and accepted flaw, then I can't see why they would not replace or repair it, possibly have to fork out postage but it is well within the expected lifetime of the product.

Happened me too, well actually the lhs tab broke off. I use duck tape wrapping around the stem and the lower part of the unit. As both your tabs have broke off I'd send it back for replacement. Let us know how you get on.

If they wont replace it, you could glue it to the mount and just re-secure the mount to the bike with the rubber bands before each spin.

Checked: it's well out of warranty.

Only option for repair is to ship it back to Garmin. €91.60 for repair/refurb. I'd get 90 days' warranty with it.

Happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I emailed Garmin UK support and got a reply two weeks later telling me to return my broken tabbed Garmin to them. They replaced it free of charge with a refurbished model with a 90 days warranty. Fair play to them as my Garmin was bought in December 2009! I think the mounting tabs are a design flaw that Garmin are aware of on an otherwise excellent product.

So, I telephoned Garmin support: person there claimed that they had never heard of the problem and insisted I would need to pay for the repair.

Emailed Garmin support: that contact person agreed that the tabs should never break off and that they would repair the unit free-of-charge even though it's out of warranty.

I did as Haldir suggested above - emailed Garmin UK Support last night and got a message this morning saying they'd be happy to replace, even tho I bought it around 2yrs ago. That's very good customer care to be fair.

    Yep, I'll +1 that.

They gave me a brand new cadence sensor for my Edge 705 when I told them that mine was bust (turned out it wasn't but just needed a very long reset time, sans batterie, but it did die several months later) - No questions asked because it was a known fault. That's really what I expect from a manufacturer (and rarely get!).

They also happily gave me a few SDcard covers when I lost mine.

Update: I received the refurbished unit back today. It looks as good as new.
