Ticking sound in engine

    Hi,

    I drive a 04 Hyundai Elanra (Diesel).

When I start the engine, it turns over fine and in idle there is a fast ticking sound. It disappears when I depress the clutch.

What is this? Mass fly wheel problem?

If it is, the car is not worth fixing.

    Cheers:)

    Could be the release bearing.

Do you know for certail if your car has a dmf?

Am 99% certain it does. The gear changing is also very very rough especially going through the lower gears and the engine makes all sorts of noises. It drives absolutely fine when in 5th and cruising alon. Accelerating after changing gear is also rough as in it shudders.

ps. I bought this car on a limited budget.

Is it the engine making the noises or the gearbox?

Well that's the thing..a little hard to tell but I would say it is the gear box. Once I change gear and accelerate it sounds terrible as I move up through the gears. My amateur mechanics would say that the gearbox/dmf are fecked and the last owner (only owner) has worn the clutch/gearbox out?

Well engine is running the whole time so if, while the noise it there, accelerating or whatever, you press the clutch down and the noise stops, then its the gearbox/clutch/dmf

I have merged 2 different issues:

    1. The ticking sound when in idle that goes away when I depress the clutch, and
    2. The general roughness/vibrations/shuddering when changing gears and acceleraring straight after changing gears.

I guess it is all related. A DMF problem and damage to the gearbax?

Anyone got a ball park figure of fixing this?

If it is uneconomic to fix how long can I get away with driving it?

Now I only drive 30-40 miles per week so not a big deal. When I bought the car I had a 112 mile round trip to work. Change of jobs and get the train everyday to work.
