Dealing with stiff legs

I've started jogging again this week for the first time in a year. The first 2 days, I took it easy, alternating between running and walking but the last 2 days I pushed myself more, doing a full 20 minute run without stopping and today my legs are killing me  Ive been stretching them out all day but they don't seem to be getting any better. Would it be worth it going for a run to see if they might supple out a bit or would I be better off giving it a break for today? Thanks :D

time is the only real healer im afraid, foam roller might help but really its just a case of your legs getting used to the exercise again, at least you wont get the tightness as bad again! you can go for a jog if you want id probably just rest if seen as you're only starting back

very short easy jog in the middle of a short walk will get everything moving a bit and you'll feel a bit better.

Stretching in the mornings helps a lot. I often wake up with stiff tired legs after long runs.
Also tiger balm cooling gel is really good.

some brufen should help. But the best cure is to get moving again. Next time you go it won't be anywhere near as bad.

The King is right - got to keep moving. It gets easier over time!
But trust me on the stretching.

Hi Mrs Postman and well done for getting back into it. I was just wondering if you finished with a cool down? In my case that means slowing my jog to an even slower jog and then walking for the last 5 mins and I've never had stiff/sore legs after running (admittedly I've only been doing this 6 months) except after one particular race when I a) ran much harder than usual and hadn't trained all week and b) I skipped the cool down and just did a few stretches. I stretch too but I read that it's the cool down that helps flush metabolites like H+ out of your legs and circulate them back to your liver and kidneys for processing. I'm not sure how true that is but since my current regime seems to be working, I've no plans to change it.

I find compression gear can help with the stiffness

Thanks for the replies :D I really must pick up some tiger balm, it's been mentioned to me more than once in the last week. I do stretch a lot but I usually don't bother doing a proper cool down, when I'm out there I just want to get all the running out of the way :o not as sore today so I'll give it another lash and see :)

Ha, I remember that feeling all right! I used to do most of my running in parks so my cool down incorporated the walk home, worked out quite well. Glad the legs are feeling better!
